Yukon And Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in To Sign Forty Mile Management Plan

DAWSON CITY – Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and the Government of Yukon will officially sign the Forty Mile, Fort Cudahy and Fort Constantine Historic Site Management Plan in a special ceremony Sunday at the Forty Mile site.

The signing ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 11 at 2 p.m. and all Yukoners are invited to attend. Following the signing ceremony, visitors will be treated to a barbecue and live entertainment.

“Forty Mile is vital to understanding the story of the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in and the Yukon Territory,” Chief Darren Taylor said. “We are happy to work with the Yukon government to protect and celebrate the value of this important historic site.”

Forty Mile, Fort Cudahy and Fort Constantine Historic Site is co-owned and co-managed by Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and Yukon government. The management plan is a requirement under the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Final Agreement. It is also the first step in the conservation of heritage resources at Forty Mile, Fort Cudahy and Fort Constantine.

“This is an important day for Forty Mile,” Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor said. “This management plan is the culmination of several years work, and will provide sound guidance for the cooperative management of the cultural and natural resources at this very important historic site.”

For several years, the Yukon government’s Department of Tourism and Culture and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in have been working together to carry out archaeological investigations, building stabilization, site maintenance and interpretation at the site. They recently published the booklet Archaeology at Forty Mile/Ch’ëdä Dëk, an overview of archaeological studies that uncovered a history of occupation at Forty Mile dating back more than 2,000 years.
