Individual Learning Centre Grad Rates Continue To Increase

WHITEHORSE - The Government of Yukon's Individual Learning Centre (ILC), is graduating a record number of students this year. This year, 18 students will be graduating from the ILC out of the 85 students who are actively undertaking coursework to attain their secondary school credentials.

The ILC was opened by the government in February 2005 in an effort to encourage students who had dropped out of school to return to their studies.

"Part of our strategy with the Individual Learning Centre was to re-engage students who have dropped out of regular studies so that they can complete their secondary studies and achieve graduation," said Minister of Education, John Edzerza. "This government is committed to providing the best education opportunities for all Yukoners and opening up the Individual Learning Centre is a big part of our plan for increasing student success."

"Our students are focused on their goals, achievements and success," said Bill Bennett, principal at the ILC. "We are immensely proud of our graduates and those students at the ILC who will continue with us next year."

"I commend the graduating students for their commitment to learning—they've made a very smart decision to come back to school to finish their secondary education," said Edzerza. "I'd like to extend my congratulations to the second graduating class of the ILC, and to all Yukon graduates—the class of 2006."
