Yukon First Nation Documentary Production Fund Announced

WHITEHORSE - Department of Economic Development and Northern Native Broadcasting Yukon (NNBY) today announced the creation of a documentary production fund for Yukon First Nation film and television producers.

The Yukon First Nation Film and Television Production Fund will support emerging or established Yukon First Nation producers in the development and production of aboriginal or northern documentaries.

"First Nations play an integral role in the economic development of Yukon," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. "This partnership with NNBY will allow Yukon First Nations to further develop the skills necessary to participate in our growing film and television production industry."

The Department of Economic Development and NNBY will each contribute $20,000 to enable a maximum of $40,000 of funding. The successful productions will be broadcast on Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) as part of the flagship series NEDAA – Your Eye on the Yukon.

"This is an exciting co-production," Shirley Adamson, CEO of Northern Native Broadcasting Yukon, said. "We have always invested in Yukon First Nations producers and stories with an eye to increasing both aboriginal content and talent in the industry, this collaboration with the Government of Yukon increases our capacity to do that. With this new fund we are actively facilitating creative and financial partnerships that give new or experienced aboriginal producers the resources to tell stories in their own voices."

Northern Native Broadcasting Yukon is a non-profit organization owned and operated by Yukon First Nations and is one of the original founding members of APTN. In addition to its television programming, NNBY also serves all Yukon communities and parts of northern British Columbia and the MacKenzie Delta in the Northwest Territories with FM radio programming through CHON-FM.

More information, application forms and production guidelines are available at Northern Native Broadcasting Yukon www.nnby.net Deadline for application is 4:30 p.m. August 31, 2006.
