Whitehorse Land Development Agreement Signed
WHITEHORSE – Premier Dennis Fentie and City of Whitehorse Mayor Ernie Bourassa participated in the Land Development Protocol Agreement signing ceremony this morning.
The protocol agreement identifies the lead roles and responsibilities of each government for all new land development proposals within the boundaries of the City of Whitehorse.
"We are creating a land development process that is clear, timely, efficient and cost effective for the public and for all stakeholders," Premier Fentie said. "Through this protocol with the City of Whitehorse, we’re developing solutions to help satisfy the demand for land and assist our local economy to keep growing."
Under the agreement, the City of Whitehorse will undertake all land development planning, engineering and technical studies, complete the required environmental assessments and conduct all public consultation. Government of Yukon’s main responsibility will be to construct land development projects.
"The City of Whitehorse is ready and willing to assume the lead role in key aspects of the land development process," Mayor Bourassa said. "It is my hope that Whitehorse citizens interested in land development in their city are also ready and willing to collaborate with us in the straight forward community land planning process provided for by this agreement."
The Land Development Protocol Agreement calls on both governments to work collaboratively on the development of a process to sell raw land to private developers. It ensures Government of Yukon consults with the City before disposing of raw land to a third party. The agreement also asks for consideration to be given to the development of an alternative approach to lot sales in which the City could act as the front-counter agent on behalf of the Government of Yukon.
