Fentie & Prentice To Discuss Economic Development, Land Claims

WHITEHORSE - Premier Dennis Fentie is looking forward to his first local meeting with Indian Affairs and Northern Development Minister Jim Prentice on Friday.

"We believe that a respectful and meaningful working relationship with Canada is absolutely essential to make progress in improving the lives of Yukoners, whether in healthcare, education, housing, economic development, implementation of the treaties or other areas, " Fentie said.

Economic development for the North, Territorial Formula Financing, land claims and the Alaska Highway Pipeline Project are topics for discussion during the minister’s visit.

Prentice will be in Whitehorse, which is the final destination of his first visit to the three northern territories, April 21. This meeting will serve as follow-up to the initial meeting the premier had with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in February.

Premier Fentie, Council of Yukon First Nations Grand Chief Andy Carvill and Yukon First Nation Chiefs will also meet jointly to discuss issues of common concern with the federal minister.

"We will be addressing a number of issues critical to the Yukon’s future and anticipate practical and productive discussions with Minister Prentice," Fentie added.
