Community Development Announces Tier 3 Funding

WHITEHORSE – Government of Yukon Community Development Fund will be providing up to $1.16 million in contributions to help with 13 major projects in seven communities.

"We are impressed with the imagination and innovation our community leaders have shown in their applications," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. "The fund will assist each of these projects up to the maximum amount specified, in order to bring them to fruition for their respective communities."

MacBride Museum in Whitehorse plans construction of a new exhibit entitled "The Territory Evolves" with the help of up to $149,508 in Community Development Fund contributions.

"MacBride Museum is expanding and this project will enable us to exhibit our rich collective history," Kerry Wahl, MacBride Museum Board chair, said.

The Whitehorse Lions Club, which has begun plans to construct a Water Park adjacent to the Rotary Peace Park playground, has also been approved for up to $100,000.

"We thank the Community Development Fund for the assistance, and we look forward to the completion of the water park and the fun and excitement that the kids will have using this new facility," Whitehorse Lions Club president David Ordish said.

The next intake date is Monday, May 15 for Tier 1 applications (up to $20,000), as well as Tier II ($20,001 to $75,000).

BACKGROUNDER: LIST OF TIER 3 APPLICATIONS APPROVED

Artspace North Society / Main Street Yukon Society received up to $50,000 to host the 2006 Longest Days Street Fair from June 21 to July 21, supporting tourism and culture in downtown Whitehorse. Contact Chris Dray at 667-8577.

Carcross/Tagish First Nation received up to $73,461 for Single-Track to Success, an initiative involving the construction of a trail network to support adventure tourism and youth recreation in the Carcross area. Contact Mark Wedge at 867-821-4251.

Dawson City Firefighters Association received up to $150,000 to install a fire training facility that will provide emergency responders the opportunity to learn the skills necessary on an ongoing basis. Contact Torrie Hunter at 867-993-5492.

Frostbite Music Society received up to $109,890 for its Permanent Home Project, the restoration and renovation of the Chambers House and its relocation to Shipyards Park for use as the society's office building. Contact David Prodan at 668-4921.

Great Northern Ski Society received up to $70,000 to purchase a used/refurbished Bombardier BR 350 snowcat/groomer.  Contact Peter Wright at 668-4557.

Kluane First Nation received up to $50,000 to assist with the design and engineering estimates for the construction of an elder/youth activity centre.  Contact Ted Danyluk at 867-841-4274.

Lorne Mountain Community Association received up to $88,282 for the construction of Three Season Open Air Facility, an outside, timber-framed, covered floor, seating and stage area that can be used for theatre, music, dance, festivals and local markets. Contact Sheila Alexandrovich at 667-7083.

MacBride Museum received up to $149,508 for construction of The Territory Evolves, a new exhibit on the evolution of the Yukon. Contact Patricia Cunning at 667-2709 ext 2.

Ta'an Kwach'an Council received up to $81,000 for river/riparian clean-up, the removal of surface waste/debris from the Yukon River and McIntyre Creek, as well as surrounding riparian areas. Contact Geraldine Pope at 668-3613.

Watson Lake Ski Club received up to $77,000 to assist the Watson Lake Ski Club with the purchase of a reconditioned snow groomer.  Contact Scott Allen at 867-536-8031.

Whitehorse Lions Club received up to $100,000 for its water park project, a splash play area at Rotary Peace Park adjacent to the children's play area.  Contact David Ordish at 668-7500.

Youth of Today Society received up to $77,573 for Social Tool Box, to create employment for four high-risk youth and one frontline prevention and intervention worker at the Blue Feather Youth Centre. Contact Victoria Durrant at 633-9687.

Yukon Volunteer Bureau received up to $85,050 for VOLTS, a pilot project to develop, deliver and measure the impact on organizational learning and capacity building of a new mentoring/coaching/facilitating service. Contact Tracy Erman at 456-4304.
