Yukon Opportunities Promoted At ‘Meet The North’ In Edmonton

EDMONTON - Hundreds of delegates from across Canada's North were shown why Yukon is a great place to invest and do business.

'Meet the North', a major trade show held May 8-10 in Edmonton, was attended by representatives from Government of Yukon's Department of Economic Development, the Whitehorse and Yukon Chambers of Commerce, and other Yukon business and First Nation organizations.

In all, they hosted 18 booths in 'Yukon Village,' to show participants from northern BC and Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut what Yukon has to offer. In addition to the hundreds who took in these exhibits, more than 300 delegates attended a special 'Yukon Night' on May 8.

"The time is right to grow, diversify and prosper," Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie, a keynote speaker at 'Meet the North', said. "Yukon's historic low unemployment, growing population, and exploding economy, when combined with regulatory certainty, strategic location and an immensely favourable global marketplace, is selling the territory as the place to invest and do business.

"But these forces alone are not enough. This government is committed to taking a proactive approach to enticing potential economic partners. We want to promote sustainability and diversification in Yukon’s economy," Fentie added.

Many Yukon representatives to 'Meet the North' also participated in a tour of the Leduc-Nisku business and industrial district, which has been exploring ways to integrate quality of life interests with economic strength and sustainability.

Initiatives such as participation in 'Meet the North' complement the recent release of Pathways to Prosperity, a discussion paper that outlines the long-term economic growth perspective for Yukon.
