Beringia Interpretive Centre Opens New Exhibit

WHITEHORSE - Imagine the world as it was 20,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. A new exhibit and gallery at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre provides visitors with a look into Yukon's ancient past.

Minister of Tourism and Culture Elaine Taylor will officially unveil the "Last Great Ice Age" exhibit and the new Ice Age Gallery on May 18th at 7 p.m. at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre.

"This new display captures the imagination and transports the audience back in time to witness the world as it existed when Ice Age mammals and the first people of North America lived in Beringia," Taylor said. "The Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre offers a wonderful learning experience for people of all ages and I encourage Yukoners to view this new exhibit."

The exhibit, created in partnership with the Yukon Geological Survey, uses newly acquired satellite imagery to produce an accurate representation of the northern hemisphere. The extent of glaciers, ice sheets, and former coastlines at the height of the last Ice Age is represented. The exhibit shows the subcontinent of Beringia and its extent during the last Ice Age, visualizing the northern hemisphere, including Europe and Asia 20,000 years ago.

The new Ice Age Gallery features four original works by George "Rinaldino" Teichmann including the Flat-headed Peccary, Mastodon, Western Camel and American Lion. Information on these Ice Age mammals accompanies the art works. Other Teichmann originals are on display at the Whitehorse Visitor Information Centre.
