Sport And Recreation Grants Announced

WHITEHORSE - Yukon sport and recreation groups will receive grants totaling $800,200 for 2006-07.

"Funding of these sport and recreation organizations is vital to their ability to offer services to support the efforts of the thousands of volunteers engaged in the delivery of sport, recreation and active living programs throughout the Yukon," Glenn Hart, Minister of Community Services, said.

"The efforts of these volunteers and the resources they are able to access are the key ingredients of the programs that provide opportunities for all Yukoners to enjoy physically active lifestyles.  Funding of these initiatives is an investment in the long term health and growth of Yukon people and communities."

Twenty-four Yukon Sport Governing Bodies will receive $457,200 and eight Yukon Special Recreation groups will receive $166,000.  Another $47,000 is allocated to the High Performance Athlete, Coach and Official Program and Sport Yukon will receive $130,000.

The funding to the Sport Governing Bodies includes $29,800 designed to assist sports in preparing athletes for participation in the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games in Alberta.

Funding for the annual grants is made possible by a revenue sharing agreement between Yukon Lottery Commission and Government of Yukon.  The grants are adjudicated by the Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee and administered by Community Services.

"The Yukon Lotteries Commission is a proud sponsor of these sport programs," Jim Kenyon, minister responsible for the Yukon Lotteries Commission, said. "This funding helps a wide range of sporting organizations to provide a diverse range of recreational activities for all Yukon people to experience and enjoy."

"All of the groups receiving funding provide programs and services that enhance the quality of life for Yukoners," Jim Eby, acting chair of the Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee, said.

"We are pleased to make these resources available to support the excellent work being done by these and the other dedicated volunteers in the sport and recreation system in the Yukon."
