December 2005 Arts Fund Supports 22 Cultural Projects
WHITEHORSE - The Arts Fund is contributing a total of $200,197 to 22 projects that address the creative development of the arts in the Yukon, announced Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor.
The Dec. 15, 2005 intake received 27 applications in total with requests totalling approx. $335,000.
"Many projects are delivered by collectives, First Nations, community groups and youth organizations in addition to established arts groups," Taylor said. "It is indeed encouraging to note that the number of projects submitted for funding continues to increase each year, confirming genuine interest and support for this important funding made available to our arts and cultural community."
The Yukon Aboriginal Artists Collective received $7,197 in support of the 2006 Yukon/NWT Aboriginal Craft and Fashion Show. The workshops and craft sales run during Rendezvous weekend.
"The Yukon Aboriginal Artists Collective is pleased and grateful to receive government funding in support of our project," event coordinator Deb Jutra said. "The 2006 Yukon/NWT Aboriginal Craft and Fashion Show will be an exciting cross-border event, bringing artists, artisans and First Nations together to showcase aboriginal arts, crafts and fashion. It will also offer economic opportunities to a very talented group of people while promoting and preserving rich northern culture and heritage."
The Arts Fund is an applicant-driven funding program that supports artists and communities in creative endeavors such as festivals, events, training, touring and art creation in all forms. The fund is adjudicated four times a year by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council in an arms-length process.
In 2005, the Arts Fund supported 83 per cent of the applications submitted for funding, receiving 64 requests in total and funding 53 projects.
The next deadline for Arts Fund applications is March 15. Applicants are asked to consult with the program officer before applying by phoning 667-3535 or e-mailing artsfund@gov.yk.ca.
