Public Archives and Records Office

Welcome to the Public Archives and Records Office (PARO)...your first destination for primary resources relating to Prince Edward Island history, communities, families and customs.

The Public Archives and Records Office of Prince Edward Island acquires, preserves, and makes available for research the records of the government of this province and private-sector papers and records deemed to be of lasting historical value. As well as textual materials such as correspondence, journals, and newspapers, our holdings are rich in other formats such as photographs, maps, architectural drawings, film, and sound recordings.

Under the mandate of the Archives and Records Act, PARO leads and coordinates the corporate Recorded Information Management program for the Government of Prince Edward Island by developing policies, procedures and standards, assisting in the management of the disposition of government records, and providing training to employees.

Supplementing the public records in its care, PARO also houses the largest collection of secondary family history resources on Prince Edward Island. These include several alphabetical indexes and files created by the PEI Genealogical Society.
