Provincial Planning Branch

The Provincial Planning Branch is the designated centre within government for land use and development policy. It receives its mandate primarily through the Planning Act and the Lands Protection Act. In this capacity, it is involved with drafting legislation and regulations dealing with various aspects of land use planning such as subdivision and development, telecommunication towers and wind energy conversion systems, the creation of special planning areas, and the processing of amendments to Land Identification Agreement.

The branch participates in the Land Use Coordinating Committee, the GIS Coordinating Committee, and other initiatives such as the Sustainable Resource Policy and the Watershed Management Initiative.

The branch also undertakes special studies and projects and responds to requests from other government agencies and the general public for information related to land use and planning.

The branch works closely with the Building and Development section to ensure development legislation is responsive to the needs of Islanders, while striving to protect the Island landscape and agricultural lands for future generations.
