PEI Health Research Program Where can I find information about health research being conducted on PEI?IN THE 1999 BUDGET, the Government of PEI announced the establishment of a Health
Research Program. It is an unfortunate fact that our region and Province have the
highest rate of asthma in the country. It is also an unfortunate reality many Islanders
suffer from cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. In an effort to address these
issues, the Government of Prince Edward Island has established a $2 million Health
Research Program.
The Health Research Fund provides $2 million over several years to support and
enhance research capacity while increasing our understanding of health services,
health systems, and diseases in PEI. It is intended to support and promote Island
research and evidence-based decision making throughout the PEI health system. The
Fund will result in changes that will have a positive impact in the promotion, prevention
and management of certain diseases and in the delivery of health services.
The Health Research Program is intended to provide base financial support to allow
researchers to access other sources of health research funding. Assessment of
research projects will give due consideration to the following priorities: cost matching
by another agency or organization, involving Island based researchers, and providing
economic benefit to PEI.
The Guidelines for the Health Research Program outline the details of the Program.
