ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK RECOGNIZES WORK OF HEALTH INSPECTORS

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- Environmental Health Officers across the Island will be recognized this week for their valuable work in public health and safety. January 14 to 20 is designated as Environmental Public Health Week on Prince Edward Island and across the country.

This is a national campaign headed by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) to recognize the vital role of all Environmental Public Health Professionals across Canada, and the importance of environmental public health programs in our health care system.

“Environmental Health Officers, often known as Public Health Inspectors, are dedicated professionals committed to promoting and protecting public health and safety,” said Doug Currie, Minister of Health. “These individuals ensure the well-being of Islanders through education, consultation and routine inspections of public and private services and facilities.”

“Environmental Health is a vital part of the healthcare system,” said Dr. Heather Morrison, Chief Health Officer. “Environmental Health Officers have an extremely important role in supporting the Chief Health Office, and I would like to recognize and thank them for their tremendous and valuable work.”

Routine inspections and complaint investigations, performed by Health inspectors make it possible for Islanders and visitors to enjoy the benefits of optimal public health. Don Cudmore, Executive Director of the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island (TIAPEI), said, “The strong relationship that exists between Environmental Health Officers and tourism industry operators who provide services to the public is key to tourism on the Island. The role that health inspectors play, not only inspecting, but also educating the public and members of our industry, is important to our success.”

Health Inspectors are certified by the Board of Certification of CIPHI. “The certification process guarantees that the highest standards for entry into the profession are met,” said Ryan Neale, Environmental Health Officer, PEI Department of Health and PEI Councillor for the local CIPHI Branch. CIPHI also provides ongoing opportunities for professional development to help address many of the challenges from our environment that can affect human health.
