On April 4, Minister Abbott marked 100 years of vaccinations in B.C. with the announcement of a new immunization framework. The announcement was made at historic Helmcken House in Victoria, the home to John Sebastian Helmcken, one of B.C.'s first physicians. There are currently 14 government-funded immunization programs in British Columbia, providing protection from diseases such as annual influenza, diphtheria, tetanus, pneumococcal and meningococcal, measles, mumps and rubella.
