Outdoor Activities - Winter

In cooperation with tourism officials of the Lower Saguenay (Rivière-Éternité, L'Anse-Saint-Jean, Petit-Saguenay), Parc national du Saguenay has set up a winter tourism committee.

The aim of this committee is to promote and improve the services offered. For more information and innovative suggestions for your winter vacation, consult their Web site.

Ice Fishing

Every year from the beginning of January to mid-March, little villages spring up on the ice of the Fjord du Saguenay. These colourful seasonal towns shelter ice fishing enthusiasts.

To tease the bottom fish, such as redfish, cod, Greenland halibut and in some places, capelin, fishers drill holes in the ice, either inside or outside the huts. At the Parc national du Saguenay in Baie Éternité, they can enjoy their favourite sport surrounded by impressively high cliffs in a breathtaking snowy landscape!

Discovery Activity

A fjord discovery activity is offered free on several Saturdays of the ice fishing season. In the company of a park warden, you can observe the phenomenon of the tides forming walls of ice along the cliffs.

Day Ice Fishing

Ice fishing huts can be reserved in advance.

Ice Fishing with Cabin Accommodations

A variety of packages are available for those who want to stay in a park cabin and have access to the group shelter or fishing huts.

Practical Details

You don't need a licence to fish on the Saguenay. However, it is important to know that certain species such as salmon, Atlantic halibut and crab, must be put back in the water.

Information on Regulations
Information on Conservation Mission

Since the park's fishing site is not accessible by car, you have to reserve a shuttle to get there. The shuttle has specific departure and arrival times. Transportation is included in all packages.

Fishing enthusiasts who want to use their own snowmobiles to visit friends or relatives staying in the fishing village of the Association de pêche blanche de Rivière-Éternité, can access the park's fishing sectors with a park season pass or a Parcs Québec season pass or by paying the park entry fee. Parking is free at the Information Kiosk.

Snowshoeing and Backcountry Skiing (Overnight Trips)

Backcountry skiing and snowshoeing are practiced on marked but ungroomed trails. Whether it is for a short or long excursion, bear in mind that the host environment is unpredictable: high winds, exposed peaks and major differences in elevation add to the challenge. Nature remains fascinating nonetheless and the excursion is well worth the effort as long as the appropriate safety precautions are taken. Backcountry skiing and snowshoeing itineraries are suggested.

In order to preserve animal and plant species living under the snow, you must remain on marked trails.

Period: Mid-December to end of March 2008 *
