Conservation Mission

Mission Statement

The mission of Parc national de la Gaspésie is to protect a representative segment of the Québec Appalachians and several exceptional features - Mont Albert, Gaspé caribou, Atlantic salmon and old growth forests.

Natural Environment

Parc national de la Gaspésie covers the most spectacular portion of the Québec Appalachians. More than 25 peaks topping 1,000 metres push skyward in the Chic-Chocs and McGerrigle mountains, the most well-known being Mont Jacques-Cartier (1,268 m.), Mont Albert (1,154 m.), and Mont Logan (1,150 m.).

In this sea of mountains, altitude plays an important role in determining the distribution of vegetation, which varies from the balsam fir/yellow birch stands of the valleys to the tundra of the peaks. The presence of various rare plants (including Serpentine Sandwort) and some exclusive to the park (for example, Mt. Albert Goldenrod) is noteworthy.

Three species of hoofed mammal-caribou, moose, and white-tailed deer-can be seen in the varied park habitat. Thirty other mammals, both large and small, can also be found, including the black bear. As for the almost 150 recorded bird species, more than a third of them nest in the park.

The 65 lakes inside park boundaries are home to speckled trout, Arctic char, and lake trout. In addition, Atlantic salmon return to the Rivière Sainte-Anne every year to spawn.
