Conservation Mission

Mission Statement

Parc national du Mont Saint-Bruno was created to ensure the permanent protection of an area representative of the natural region known as the Monteregian Hills.

Natural Environment

Mont Saint-Bruno is one of the 10 hills that make up the natural region known as the Monteregian Hills. The geological origins of Mont Saint-Bruno go back 100 million years, when magma surged up through the sedimentary rock of the lowlands. Its heat metamorphosed the surrounding rock, which then hardened. Erosion eventually uncovered Mont Saint-Bruno and all the other Monteregian Hills.

After being covered with glaciers and then flooded by the Champlain Sea, the St. Lawrence Lowlands began to look much as they do today with their unusual Monteregian Hills.

Today, Mont Saint-Bruno teems with plants and wildlife. Sugar maple, American beech, American linden, bitter hickory, and red oak are among the main types of trees found in the park's sugar maple/hickory stands. In certain areas where conditions are unsuitable for maple/hickory stands, two other exceptional forest communities may be found-red oak/sugar maple/hop-hornbeam stands and hemlock/sugar maple stands. Mont Saint-Bruno is home to about 590 species of plants, including 15 that are rare.

As for animals, birds attract the most attention, with 123 species nesting in the park and many others that stop over during migration.
