Yukon Housing Corpotation Is Focused On The Future

WHITEHORSE - Yukon Housing Corporation's (YHC) vision of the future includes more 'Green Homes' with better energy efficiency, more accommodating homes with barrier free design features and more appropriate housing for Yukon seniors according to Jim Kenyon, minister responsible for the corporation.

"We are staying the course with the corporation's business focus in the 2006-07 budget," Kenyon said. "With the increasing cost to heat homes, added to the upward trend in our real estate market and an aging population, YHC is clear on which programs and services are important for the future."

There is over $7 million in the 2006-07 budget for YHC mortgage lending programs, pending legislative approval. Recent changes to the Home Ownership Program now provide greater opportunities for low-income earners to access mortgage financing.

Yukon Housing Corp. also offers programs and services to those interested in improving their home's energy efficiency. This includes the Home Repair Program, Green Home Mortgage Program, EnerGuide for Houses energy audits, and R-2000 certification.

Over $2.5 million is available under the Home Repair program while eligible clients can access mortgage funding under a number of YHC Home Ownership Programs.

YHC is working with representatives from the Village of Haines Junction towards the development of a seniors housing facility in that community, while a new housing board is being established for the community of Faro to oversee the housing needs of seniors in that community.

"Yukon Housing Corp. is pleased to work with private sector developers towards innovative housing solutions for low-income earners, seniors and to address other housing needs within the Yukon," Kenyon said. "There are some great ideas out there, and I believe by working together we can make a positive difference in addressing the territory's housing needs."
