PREMIER ANNOUNCES INVESTMENT BY THE GOVERNMENT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SARS VACCINE
Premier Gordon Campbell announces a $2.6-million investment by the government to accelerate the development of a vaccine against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in Vancouver on April 29, 2003. The funding will allow B.C. to take a leadership role in the development of a vaccine through the B.C. SARS Vaccine Science Initiative.

AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND FISHERIES DEPUTY APPOINTED

CITIZENS' ASSEMBLY TO STRENGTHEN PUBLIC CONFIDENCE
Premier Gordon Campbell, joined by Attorney General Geoff Plant, outlines the terms of reference for the proposed citizens' assembly on electoral reform on April 28, 2003. The 159-member assembly will hold public hearings across B.C. to look at all possible models for electing MLAs and report back to the government by December 2004.

VICTORIA — The government is introducing a motion in the legislature to establish a citizens' assembly that will strengthen public confidence in the electoral system, by providing a forum to consider options for how MLAs are elected, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.

$204-MILLION PROJECT TO CREATE JOBS, RENEWABLE ENERGY

CASTLEGAR — The province is investing $204 million to develop a 120-megawatt Brilliant power plant expansion near Castlegar that will provide 150 jobs and increase B.C.'s supply of renewable energy. Premier Gordon Campbell announced the investment today at an event marking the start of the project.

PREMIER ANNOUNCES $16.7 MILLION TO IMPROVE SAFETY ON INTERIOR HIGHWAYS
Premier Campbell details the two highway improvement projects, including: $3.75 million to realign and improve safety on 1.6 kilometres of Highway 5 at Preacher Hill between Barriere and Little Fort; and $12.96 million to four-lane 4.2 kilometres of Highway 1 between Broderick Creek and Ford Road. To date, the province and the federal government have committed $219 million to upgrade the Highway 1 corridor through B.C.
