YEAR OF THE AGREEMENT IN B.C. - 2006 IN REVIEW

As we approach the end of another year, many of us will take time to reflect back on 2006 even as we look forward to a new year, with new successes and new opportunities. Like any year, 2006 required us all to face both challenges and loss.

B.C. AND ALBERTA COLLEGES ADDRESS SKILLS SHORTAGE
Premier Gordon Campbell announced a new agreement that will see colleges and technical institutes in B.C. and Alberta work together to help train more of the skilled workers needed by two of Canada's strongest provincial economies.

VANCOUVER — A shortage of skilled workers in British Columbia and Alberta has community colleges and technical institutes in both provinces joining forces to strengthen post-secondary education, announced Premier Gordon Campbell today.

AGREEMENT REACHED TO SETTLE FOUR-DECADE OLD FLOODING IMPACTS
Premier Gordon Campbell announced agreements in-principle have been reached with the Tsay Key Dene Band and the Kwadacha Nation to address the impact on their communities and culture from the construction of the Bennett Dam and the Williston Reservoir 40 years ago. With Premier Campbell for the announcement were (l to r) Energy Minister Richard Neufeld, BC Hydro President and CEO Bob Elton, Aboriginal Relations Minister Michael de Jong, Dave Porter of the First Nations Leadership Council and Chair of the Kaska Dena Council, Tsay Keh Dene Chief Johnny Pierre, Kwadacha Chief Donny Van Somer and Elder Jean Isaac.

VICTORIA — The Province of British Columbia and BC Hydro have reached Agreements in Principle (AIP) with the Tsay Keh Dene Band and the Kwadacha Nation that will address the impacts of flooding from the Williston Reservoir on these First Nations in the Peace River Valley region, announced Premier Gordon Campbell today.

PROVINCE REACHES LANDMARK FINAL AGREEMENT WITH MAA-NULTH FIRST NATIONS
Premier Gordon Campbell joined Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Michael de Jong and federal Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Jim Prentice to witness the initialling of a Final Agreement with the Maa-nulth First Nations, the first such agreement reached on Vancouver Island under the B.C. Treaty Commission process.

VICTORIA — Premier Gordon Campbell, the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, and five Chiefs representing the Maa-nulth First Nations on Vancouver Island witnessed the joint initialling of the third Final Agreement reached under the British Columbia treaty process today.

FINAL AGREEMENT INITIALLED WITH TSAWWASSEN FIRST NATION
Premier Gordon Campbell witnessed the initialing of the Final Agreement with Tsawwassen First Nation that, if ratified, will become the first urban treaty reached under the B.C. Treaty Commission Process.

TSAWWASSEN — Premier Gordon Campbell, the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, and Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Kim Baird today witnessed the joint initialling of the first Lower Mainland Final Agreement reached under the British Columbia treaty process.

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

Premier Gordon Campbell took part in the Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women ceremony at the B.C. Legislature on December 6th, 2006. The event remembers the victims of the Montreal massacre and honours all women affected by violence.

COUNCIL REPORT HELPS B.C. READY FOR AGING SOCIETY

VANCOUVER — Premier Gordon Campbell received a report today from the Premier's Council on Aging and Seniors' Issues, which recommends government take action in a number of key areas to ensure B.C.'s rapidly growing seniors population continues to participate in their communities and live independent, healthy lives.
