PREMIER AND VANOC CEO THANK VENUE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS

PREMIER JOINS AIR INDIA FAMILIES TO UNVEIL MEMORIAL
Premier Gordon Campbell was joined by family members and friends of Air India Flight 182 victims to unveil a memorial in Stanley Park on July 27. The memorial recognizes the individual and collective loss of 331 lives in Canada's worst terrorist incident, including all who were on the flight and two baggage handlers at Tokyo's Narita Airport, on June 23, 1985. Ceperley playground in Stanley Park was redeveloped in memory of the victims, which included 82 children. Along with improvements to the play area, the park includes a quiet space for contemplation that will serve as a site for the remembrance of the victims.

PREMIER CONGRATULATES TSAWWASSEN FIRST NATION ON LANDMARK TREATY VOTE
Premier Gordon Campbell visited the Tsawwassen First Nation July 26 to congratulate Chief Kim Baird for her leadership following the landmark treaty vote in which the Tsawwassen First Nation ratified the Final Agreement. The 358 Coast Salish people who are members of the Tsawwassen Band occupy traditional lands on the Strait of Georgia near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal, about 25 km south of Vancouver. In the coming months, the Province will introduce Tsawwassen settlement legislation.

TSAWWASSEN – Premier Gordon Campbell congratulated the Tsawwassen First Nation for ratifying the first modern day treaty negotiated under the British Columbia treaty process.

PREMIER ANNOUNCES FUNDS TO UPGRADE HISTORIC HALL, LODGE
Premier Gordon Campbell visited 100 Mile House July 25 to present a cheque for $334,760 that will enable the District of 100 Mile House to upgrade its Lodge and Conference Centre and Martin Exeter Hall. The enhancements, funded through the Province's Towns for Tomorrow program, will ensure the public facility is safe and accessible. The lodge and hall are on the site of the community's original roadhouse.

100 MILE HOUSE – The Province is providing $334,760 through the Towns for Tomorrow program to the District of 100 Mile House to upgrade the historic Martin Exeter Hall and 100 Mile Lodge Conference Centre, Premier Gordon Campbell announced.

PROVINCE FUNDS WILLIAMS LAKE SPIRIT SQUARE
Premier Gordon Campbell visited Williams Lake July 25 to present a $267,500 cheque toward developing Courthouse Square, the city's Spirit Squares project. The Premier was joined by Williams Lake Mayor Scott Nelson, youth ambassadors from the Williams Lake Central Business Improvement Association and Rick Thorpe, Minister of Small Business and Revenue and MLA for Okanagan-Westside. Spirit Squares is one of the Province's four Green Cities programs, developed to support the Province's vision of vibrant, sustainable, healthy communities.

WILLIAMS LAKE – The Province will provide $267,500 to the City of Williams Lake to transform Courthouse Square into a Spirit Square to celebrate British Columbia’s 150th anniversary in 2008 and create a meeting place that will host community events for years to come, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.

PREMIER ANNOUNCES FUNDS FOR MERRITT SPIRIT SQUARE
Premier Gordon Campbell and Rick Thorpe, Minister of Small Business and Revenue and MLA for Okanagan-Westside, presented a giant cheque to Merritt Mayor David Laird and Ron Sanders, president of Merritt's Walk of Stars Society on July 25. The Legacy Plaza conversion will see a downtown parking lot transformed into a civic square that will accommodate 500 and reflect Merritt's First Nations heritage and status as Canada's country music capital.

MERRITT – The Province is providing $500,000 through the Spirit Squares program to the City of Merritt to transform a downtown parking lot into Legacy Plaza, a gathering place that will be able to host outdoor community events in the heart of downtown, Premier Gordon Campbell announced.

B.C. TO STRENGTHEN REGIONAL TIES AT PNWER SUMMIT
In his keynote address July 23 to the 17th annual summit of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region, Premier Gordon Campbell addressed climate change, border security, trade with Asia and social issues facing member jurisdictions (B.C., Alberta, the Yukon, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana). Delegates from government, business and industry met in Anchorage, Alaska for five days of discussions. Vancouver will host next year’s summit.

VICTORIA – British Columbia will strengthen regional collaboration on climate change, Asia-Pacific trade, energy, border-crossing, and tourism leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games as Premier Gordon Campbell leads a delegation to the 2007 Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) summit in Anchorage, Alaska, July 22 to 26.

PREMIER CAMPBELL KICKS OFF TOUR DE GASTOWN MEN'S RACE
Premier Gordon Campbell attended the Tour de Gastown, one of Canada's foremost cycling events, July 18. The men's and women's races draw top North American riders and competitors from as far away as Australia and New Zealand. Past winners include seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong, who will ride with the Premier and MLA Sindi Hawkins, left, in the Tour de Courage in late September.

Premier Gordon Campbell attended the Tour de Gastown, one of Canada's foremost cycling events.

SEA-TO-SKY HIGHWAY UPGRADE PASSES HALFWAY MARK
On July 10, Premier Campbell thanked workers on the Sea-to-Sky Highway upgrade, which is now more than 50 per cent complete. The $600-million project, which will increase public safety with gentler curves and longer sightlines, and improve reliability and shorten travel times with more passing lanes, is on time and on budget.

ARTS COMMUNITY WELCOMES HOUSING FOR SENIORS AND DISABLED
Premier Gordon Campbell takes part in opening celebrations for PAL Vancouver, the Performing Arts Lodge. Located in Coal Harbour, the $20.7 million, 111-unit facility is a mixed-income housing development for seniors and people with disabilities, who are or have been involved in the professional performing arts and allied industries.

ACTNOW BC LAUNCHES PROVINCEWIDE HEALTHY LIVING TOUR
On Canada Day, Premier Campbell launched the ActNow BC Road to Health Community Tour in Surrey. The interactive, activity-based tour provides fun ways to learn about living healthier and accessing local sport and recreation activities. Two tractor-trailers packed with games, hands-on exhibits and informative displays will visit 22 B.C. communities by Nov. 25.

SURREY – British Columbians will learn about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity through an interactive, activity-oriented tour launched today by Premier Gordon Campbell and Gordon Hogg, Minister of State for ActNow BC.
