PREMIER WELCOMES CLIMATE ACTION CHAMPION AL GORE TO B.C.
Premier Gordon Campbell introduced former vice-president of America Al Gore at Gore's speaking engagements in Vancouver and Victoria Sept. 29, 2007. Gore delivered his global warning on global warming, underscoring his call for action to reduce the effects of climate change. Two days earlier, Premier Campbell signed a Climate Action Charter with dozens of B.C. municipalities, which commits local governments to work toward carbon-neutral operations by 2012, and announced the Province's intention to establish legally binding emission reduction targets for 2012 and 2016.

Premier Gordon Campbell introduced environmental advocate and former vice-president Al Gore at his Vancouver and Victoria speaking engagements Sept. 29.

FUNDING FOR EXPANSION AND UPGRADING OF TRANSLINK FLEET ANNOUNCED
The Honourable Stockwell Day, federal Minister of Public Safety, attended the 2007 Convention of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Sept. 28, 2007, to present $25 million from the Gas Tax Agreement that will help finance the purchase of 199 buses in 2008. Twenty-one articulated hydrid buses and 69 clean-diesel buses will be added to TransLink's fleet, while 109 alternative technology buses will replace older  units. Accepting the cheque for the Province of B.C. and TransLink are (left to right) Premier Gordon Campbell; Susan Gimse, UBCM President Elect and a Director of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District; and Malcolm Brodie, TransLink chair and Mayor of Richmond.

ADDRESS TO UNION OF B.C. MUNICIPALITIES ANNUAL CONVENTION

On Sept. 28, Premier Campbell delivered his annual address to assembled local government representatives at the Union of B.C. Municipalities Annual Convention. The speech focused on a variety of work the Province will engage in with local and federal governments, with emphasis on climate action, energy, flood prevention and transit improvement activities.

AWARDS RECOGNIZE B.C.’S MOST INNOVATIVE GREEN CITIES
Premier Gordon Campbell introduced and handed out awards to winners of the Province's inaugural Green City Awards. Seven outstanding communities were selected as recipients for demonstrating leadership and action in a range of environmental sustainability initiatives. The Premier noted the vital role communities will play in helping the Province achieve its goal of a 33 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, to 10 per cent below 1990 levels. Following the awards ceremony, the Premier was joined by representatives of local governments from across B.C. to sign a Climate Action Charter with the Province and the Union of BC Municipalities, committing to a goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2012.

KELOWNA TO GET HEART CENTRE, MORE BEDS, DR. TRAINING

KELOWNA – Kelowna General Hospital will expand to provide future capacity for more patient beds, the Interior’s first-ever revascularization cardiac centre and a planned fourth site for the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.

PROVINCE PROVIDES $11 MILLION FOR PG AIRPORT EXPANSION

PRINCE GEORGE – The Province will provide up to $11 million to the Prince George Airport for expansion of its main runway so it can service larger airlines flying between Asia and North America, Premier Gordon Campbell announced.

BC HYDRO DRAFTS TEAM POWER SMART
Premier Gordon Campbell was joined by more than a dozen B.C. celebrities Sept. 20 to help launch Team Power Smart, a BC Hydro campaign to help build awareness of ways everyone can help make a difference by conserving energy. In the face of growing electricity consumption across B.C., the Premier is encouraging all British Columbians to help restore the province to electricity self-sufficiency by 2016. Simple steps like replacing conventional light bulbs with compact fluorescents can help reduce environmental impacts while saving families money.

VANCOUVER – BC Hydro announced the draft of more than 20 prominent British Columbians to lead Team Power Smart – a province wide initiative to encourage B.C. residents to conserve electricity.

NEW CAMPUS, FACILITIES EXPAND LOCAL CAREER TRAINING
On Sept. 17, Premier Gordon Campbell and Bill Bennett, MLA for East Kootenay, officially opened Summit Hall and Pinnacle Hall on the Cranbrook College of the Rockies campus. Summit Hall will house nursing and community care labs, as well as spaces for study and administration. As a new trades building, Pinnacle Hall will accommodate automotive and heavy-duty mechanics. The two new halls will bring the college's trade programs together in Cranbrook.

CRANBROOK – A second College of the Rockies campus and new training facilities will enable hundreds of new students to access trades and academic programs locally, Premier Gordon Campbell said today at the official opening of Pinnacle Hall, Summit Hall and the new Gold Creek campus.

PREMIER SHARES 2010 SPIRIT WITH CRANBROOK STUDENTS
Grade 4 and 5 students exercising at a new track on the College of the Rockies campus in Cranbrook were delighted when Premier Gordon Campbell stopped by to hand out pins bearing the logo of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The Games will open 879 days from the date of this Cranbrook visit, Sept. 17. The Premier was in Cranbrook to celebrate recent renovations to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and to open the new Gold Creek Campus of the College of the Rockies and new facilities at the college's existing local campus. The Province provided $90,000 toward upgrading of the track, which is on the main College of the Rockies campus in Cranbrook.<br>

UPGRADES MEAN MORE PATIENT SERVICES IN EAST KOOTENAY
Premier Gordon Campbell was joined by Dr. Joe Kotlarz, medical director for East Kootenay Regional Hospital District (left), Scott Manjak, chair of the district, Bill Bennett, MLA for East Kootenay, and Minister of Health George Abbott at the opening of the $32-million upgrade to Cranbrook's East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The renovations included new sections for radiology, ultrasound, CT and nuclear medicine, plus accommodations for a mobile MRI unit.

CRANBROOK – The completion of $32 million in renovations and upgrades at East Kootenay Regional Hospital means fewer patients will have to travel to receive diagnostic imaging services like ultrasounds, Premier Gordon Campbell announced.

PREMIER OPENS LEADING-EDGE DIGITAL MEDIA CENTRE
Premier Gordon Campbell was at Vancouver's Great Northern Way campus, alongside his Second Life virtual representation or "avatar," to launch the new Centre for Digital Media and Canada's first Master's Degree in Digital Media. The centre will help to establish B.C. as a global leader in the fast-growing digital media industry, which has more than 1,000 companies and employs more than 15,000 people in B.C. alone. September's inaugural class for the two-year graduate degree program includes 21 students from around the world, including Canada, the U.S., India, Egypt and China.

VANCOUVER – Premier Gordon Campbell officially opened the Centre for Digital Media today at the Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver and announced Canada’s first Master’s Degree in Digital Media.

PREMIER CONGRATULATES PORTS ON FRIENDSHIP AGREEMENT
Premier Gordon Campbell was joined by funding partner representatives and dignitaries to cut the ribbon opening the Port of Prince Rupert's new $170-million Fairview Container Terminal on Sept. 12. The terminal, to which the Province contributed $30 million, is creating a new high-speed, congestion-free trade corridor between Asia and North America, and is a major milestone in British Columbia's gateway initiative.

PRINCE RUPERT – A friendship agreement signed between the Port of Ningbo, China, and the newly expanded Port of Prince Rupert builds on the promise of the Pacific Gateway, Premier Gordon Campbell said today at the opening of Prince Rupert’s new container terminal.

PREMIER JOINS CELEBRATION OF TREATY RATIFICATION IN ANACLA
Premier Gordon Campbell joins a proud elder at the Pawatts Centre on Sept. 7 in Anacla, during his visit to celebrate the July 28 vote to approve the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement by the Huu-ay-aht First Nation. The Pawatts Centre celebrates the language of the Huu-ayaht people, and serves to teach the First Nation's youngest members about their heritage. The Premier toured the facility, where 6-7 elders teach six children aged 4-5.

Premier Gordon Campbell visited Anacla on Sept. 7 to celebrate the July 28 approval of the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement.

PREMIER HELPS LAUNCH JUVENILE DIABETES FUNDRAISING RIDE
Premier Gordon Campbell hugs Taylor Balagno, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's youth ambassador, at the Sept. 6 kick-off party for Team H2V's fundraising ride. Taylor's father, Kyle, and four other elite recreational cyclists from the Vancouver area intend to ride in a continuous relay for nine days from Halifax to Vancouver, arrive in Stanley Park on Sept. 23 and setting a Guinness record for fastest Trans Canada cycle by a relay team. They are also well on their way to raising $1 million for the JDRF.

VANCOUVER – Premier Gordon Campbell helped five elite, local cyclists launch a cross-Canada fundraiser today to benefit juvenile diabetes research.
