International Cultural Relations Program - Literature and Publishing

As part of its International Cultural Relations Program, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) provides grants to Canadian groups and individuals for the promotion of Canadian culture abroad. Grants may be awarded to individuals, institutions or organizations that create, interpret, promote or market Canadian cultural products for the international market.

Eligibility Criteria

Are eligible:

  • writers published by a recognized Canadian and/or foreign commercial publisher; and
  • Canadian literary agents selling publishing rights to foreign publishers.

Eligible Activities

Financial assistance may be requested for:

  • promotional projects (including reading tours and media events) by writers in support of one of their works (generally the support of the foreign publisher is required); and
  • participation by writers or their agents in important international book fairs.

Project guidelines

The program objective is the promotion of Canadian interests abroad by increasing public awareness of Canada and Canadian literature through support for the promotion in foreign markets or recently published fiction and works of literary non-fiction.

Amount of grant

Grants are awarded subject to the availability of funds and generally cover the cost of international travel of the applicant.

Application procedures

  • applications should include a brief, written description of the proposed project, with dates, places and a detailed budget, including the contribution of the foreign publisher or host institution;
  • applications should demonstrate the cultural, commercial and promotional benefits of the project;
  • applications should include a brief curriculum vitae of the writer and a list of previous works. A copy of the work to be promoted and some reviews should be submitted by mail to the address listed below;
  • applications should also include the name, address, and telephone and facsimile numbers of the applicant;
  • applications must be submitted via the online application form, accessible through the Web site on the Literature and Publishing page.  Please consult the program guidelines, also at this site.

Conformity with these guidelines does not guarantee funding by the program.

Decisions will generally be communicated two to four months after receipt of the application.
