Avian Influenza Update
Since the last update in mid-June, the WHO confirmed 16 cases (7 retrospectively confirmed) of human infection with H5N1, of which 11 were fatal: 2 in Egypt, 12 in Indonesia, 1 in Thailand and 1 in Iraq. Since November 2003, there have been a total of 257 WHO laboratory confirmed human cases and 141 deaths (case fatality of 55%) in 10 countries: Dijbouti, Egypt, China, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Iraq, Thailand, Turkey and Viet Nam.

Vancouver, BC – Unpasteurized apple juice and cider can become infected with harmful bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. The Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Perry Kendall and the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) are reminding the public to make sure apple juice and cider are pasteurized.

Update on Delivery of Influenza Vaccine for the 2006 Season
Flu vaccine manufacturers have reported problems growing one of the strains recommended for this season’s flu shot. As a result, the vaccine should be available to the provinces and territories at the end of October or beginning of November.

The BC Centre for Disease Control is advising contact lens users and caregivers of children who use contact lenses to check their medicine cabinets for a specific type of contact lens cleaner that is not sold in Canada but which they may have acquired while outside the country.
