COMRIF Highlights

Ontario ’s small urban and rural municipalities and Local Services Boards expressed a strong interest in COMRIF since its announcement in November 2004. Over all three intakes, 993 applications were received and a total of 280 projects were funded with a combined federal and provincial investment of $578 million.

Projects that received funding through COMRIF span all of the 5 top priorities (roads, bridges, water, wastewater, and solid waste management) and 67% of funding went to “green” projects (water, wastewater, and solid waste management), which was a commitment of the program.

Through all three intakes, COMRIF was able to invest in Ontario’s smaller communities with 75% of funded projects in communities with populations of 25,000 or less. Ontario’s rural communities also benefited with 50% of funded projects in communities with populations of 10,000 or less.

COMRIF is a competitive, merit-based program and for all intakes projects were assessed against three criteria: health and safety, public policy priorities, and value for money.

In December 2006, COMRIF also launched its $5.96 million Asset Management Program (AMP) aimed at helping eligible municipalities and LSBs improve and increase their capacity to manage their infrastructure assets.
