Request For Proposals
2008 Open Provincial Competition The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) is inviting applications to the 2008 Open Provincial Competition, Career Scientist Awards. The term of the award begins July 1, 2008. The overall goal of the program is to support and develop health services research personnel in Ontario. Through the Career Scientist Awards, the ministry supports outstanding candidates in carrying out independent research in health services. By investing in health services researchers in Ontario, the ministry is working to ensure that the necessary human resources are present to provide the evidence required to make evidence-based decisions in policy, development, planning and delivery of health services and programs. Career Scientists’ health services research examines the management, organization, and effectiveness of health services to inform decision-making about the important issues facing Ontario’s health care system. These awards provide a salary subsidy for promising health researchers in the early stages of their careers. The subsidy enables award recipients to devote a minimum of 75% of their time to performing health services research, and thereby establish themselves in their field of research. The award is granted for five years, and the ministry’s contribution to the scientist’s salary is $70,000 per annum plus benefits. To further equip Career Scientists to build the evidence base for decision-making in MOHLTC and in the health system, the possibility of a six month Secondment/Exchange component to a decision-making environment will be part of the five year award. The ministry is particularly interested in research activities that contribute to effective knowledge transfer (networks, structures, tools and/or processes to facilitate dissemination and uptake of research evidence in decision making). In addition, research programs related to ageing at home and home care, chronic disease prevention and management – particularly diabetes, and mental health will be given particular consideration, though any research program that demonstrates relevance and importance will be considered.
