There are in excess of 600 Crime Stoppers programs in the world today of which 107 are operational in Canada. Crime Stoppers is truly an international initiative with programs in Canada, the United States of America, Australia, Great Britain, Guam and the Caribbean. As an indication of the significant role played by Crime Stoppers, U.S. President Bush made a personal appeal to Crime Stoppers programmes worldwide to assist in providing information following the disaster of September 11th.

Crime StoppersThere are presently 39 Crime Stoppers programs servicing the Province of Ontario. These programs effectively pool the resources of the police, community and local media in the fight against crime.

The O.P.P. has committed 22 full time uniform officers, 5 part time uniform officers (sharing duties between their C.S.O. duties and Crime Stoppers) and 1 full time civilian to work with the Ontario Crime Stoppers programs. The Crime Prevention Section of the Investigation Bureau of O.P.P. General Headquarters has corporate responsibility for the program and has designated a Detective Sergeant as the Provincial Coordinator.

handcuffsWhile it varies from program to program, the O.P.P. Coordinators often work in partnership with personnel provided by municipal services. 12 Coordinators, almost half of the total O.P.P. commitment, work in "J.F.O.'s". Our partnerships have resulted in some of the most effective, award winning programs in the world. Last year O.P.P. supported Crime Stoppers programs won 36 International and Provincial awards including the very prestigious Crime Stoppers International Coordinator of the Year Award. Tips to Ontario Crime Stoppers programs have resulted in the clearing of over 120,000 cases, 63,000 arrests, the recovery of over $150 million in stolen property and the seizure of over $510 million in illicit narcotics.
