Community concern

Community concern over the increase of violence in schools and some disturbing crime trends concerning our youth has prompted the O.P.P. to take the initiative to develop the Youth Issues Unit. This Committee, consisting of police, educators and probation case workers, host an annual conference, which addresses key concerns with respect to our youth.

Provincial Task Force

The O.P.P. were an integral part of a provincial task force, ultimately tasked with the development of minimum standards and guidelines in the production of the Ontario Safe Schools Protocol. We continue to work with community partners to find solutions to problems facing youth issues and related crime.

At Risk Youth...

There is much work to be done relating to Youth crime and disorder. The Crime Prevention Section (CPS) will look toward identifying programs allowing a shift in focus to "at risk youth". Intervention Strategies Our (C.P.S.) goal is to identify ways of targeting "at risk youth" for true intervention initiatives, and strategize the best way of reaching these youth in partnership with Regions and other stakeholders. The Committee of Youth Officers for the Province of Ontario (C.O.Y.O.) is an association of youth officers dedicated to the collection and dissemination of child/youth crime and protection information. The O.P.P. has representation on the Youth Officers Committee. More information about this organization can be found on the C.O.Y.O. web site.
