The Township has a population of just fewer than 4,000 with a small portion of these residents being seasonal. In 1998 the Village of Norwood and the Township of Asphodel amalgamated to form the new Township, and this has created a balanced rural and urban economic community. The Township contains concentrations of this population in urban centre Norwood, the hamlet of Westwood, rural residential areas including Trentview Estates (near Hastings) and Asphodel Heights.

The Township of Asphodel-Norwood displays a number of characteristics synonymous with a number of early settlement nodes, including a river for water power; a mill pond and dam for mills; a railway for long-distance transportation; junction of major roadways acting as a focal point; a number of old commercial buildings suggesting an early point of commerce for the agricultural hinterland; a large and diverse agricultural economy; a large aggregate industry; lumber mills and a number of large old homes characteristic of a retirement environment for the farming community.

The Township's main commercial core is provided in Norwood, which has businesses that are of a local convenience type in nature. Specialty and/or infrequent purchases generally take place outside of Norwood. Motor vehicle sales establishments are an exception to this pattern.
