Policies

Policy development at the Commission involves in-depth research on a broad range of human rights, legal and social equality issues. This sometimes involves undertaking consultations to determine the opinions and needs of the potentially affected groups in the community. We use the resulting information to become more informed and knowledgeable about public policy issues, and to develop official public policy papers and guidelines on the interpretation and application of the Human Rights Code.

Other functions of policy development include:

• reviewing existing company anti-discrimination and harassment policies and giving advice to organizations who are developing their own.
• examining and reviewing proposed or standing provincial legislation, and government programs or policy, and making recommendations to ensure there is no conflict with the Code.
• providing advice to Commission investigators, mediators, intake and Inquiry Service Representatives to ensure that front line customer service is consistent with approved Commission policy.
