OTTAWA — Families in the Ottawa area will soon get faster cancer treatment thanks to a new Cancer Clinic at Queensway Carleton Hospital.

Premier Dalton McGuinty joined staff, doctors and volunteers at the clinic's official groundbreaking today. The clinic will house new radiation services, supportive therapy and outpatient care.

"We all know someone whose life has been touched by this devastating disease and they deserve the best care we can provide," said Premier Dalton McGuinty. "This expansion means more patients in the Ottawa region will be able to get that care when and where they need it."

Ontario is investing $82.5 million in the expansion. The project is part of The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program, which will expand radiation and cancer support services at both The Ottawa Hospital and Queensway Carleton Hospital.

"This project means so much to our community and I'm proud to be a part of it," said Ottawa West-Nepean MPP Jim Watson. "Together, we're taking a big step towards achieving our goal of opening a new cancer centre by next year."

Wait times for cancer surgeries in Ottawa are down 25 per cent compared to 2003. More than 100 full-time nursing positions have been created at hospitals in the Ottawa area in the past year.
