Canadian Space Agency (CSA)

Last Verified: 2007-01-03

The mandate of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is "To promote the peaceful use and development of space, to advance the knowledge of space through science and to ensure that space science and technology provide social and economic benefits for Canadians."

The CSA offers a number of publications, programs, initiatives, services, research centres, and more.

Eligibility Criteria

The Canadian Space Agency's products, programs and services may be of use to Canadian businesses as well as to educators, the general public and the scientific community.

Summary

Earth Observation Application Development Program (EOADP)

The EOADP strengthens partnerships with Canadian businesses well suited to capitalize on space-based Earth observation technologies. EOADP is stimulating and exploiting the application potential of these technologies, contracting work out to Canadian businesses that are positioned to develop innovative uses of Earth observation data, particularly in the value-added segment. The Canadian Space Agency, through EOADP, is building Canadian knowledge and expertise, rewarding Canadian innovation with opportunity and strengthening Canada’s economy by leading the world in Earth observation.

For background, eligibility and more, see the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) Web site at http://www.espace.gc.ca/asc/eng/industry/eoadp.asp

Technology Diffusion Program (TDP)

The Technology Diffusion Program promotes the exploitation of space technologies for non-space products and services. It supports the general objectives of the Canadian Space Agency to maximize the socio-economic benefits to Canadians through the Canadian Space Program.

For scope, eligibility and more, see the CSA Web site at http://www.space.gc.ca/asc/eng/industry/tdp.asp

Satellite Communications Program

Demand for advanced business and personal communication services, such as the Internet, is exploding to the point that satellite-based multimedia products designed to serve continental and/or global markets now represent the next major satellite communication development opportunity. The Program ensures that our industry excels on the international stage and that Canadians benefit from these developments.

For more information, see the CSA Web site at http://www.space.gc.ca/asc/eng/industry/satellites.asp

European Space Agency Program

Canada’s cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) provides an ideal platform for the sharing of knowledge and expertise and the promotion of Canadian space industries specializing in niche areas such as satellite communications, Earth observation, and space technologies. Canada and the Canadian space industry actively participate in many ESA programs. As a cooperating member, Canada participates directly in ESA programs, activities and decision-making. No other country outside Europe has such a relationship with ESA.

The ESA offers, free of charge, a practical online service called "Electronic Mail Invitation to Tender System" or EMITS.

How to Participate and more information about the ESA is available at http://www.space.gc.ca/asc/eng/industry/esa.asp

RADARSAT-1 Data for Research Use (DRU)

The Canadian Space Agency and RADARSAT International (RSI), the commercial distributor of RADARSAT-1 data, offer on a limited basis RADARSAT-1 imagery for research purposes at a special price. Canadian and foreign researchers are therefore invited to submit proposals for studies that will lead to an increased use and application of RADARSAT-1 data and data archives. As this program is ongoing, there is no time restriction for submitting proposals.

For details of this research initiative as well as the procedure for proposal preparation and submission, please see the CSA Web site at http://www.space.gc.ca/asc/eng/industry/dru.asp

Supplement Scholarships and Fellowships

The Canadian Space Agency supplements Natural Science And Engineering Research Council (NSERC) scholarships and fellowships. The program guides for postgraduate scholarships and postdoctoral scholarships, as well as the application form can be found on the CSA Web site at  http://www.space.gc.ca/asc/eng/industry/nserc.asp
