Dairy Farming

The following is meant solely to help the reader understand the main features of primary regulations governing this activity, and not meant in any way to provide a legal interpretation.

Milk Industry Act:

This Act regulates dairy farms.

Every dairy farmer is required to maintain suitable milk houses, housing for cattle, adequate water supply, and to use safe and clean methods of milk production. The Act provides for an inspection system to ensure that the milk produced meets prescribed standards and that it is produced according to requirements.

The Milk Marketing Board was established under the Natural Products Marketing Act. The amending Act also provided for a single classification of dairy farm which was tied to the end use of milk. It ensures that all milk, with the exception of raw milk used in the production of certain specialty cheeses, be pasteurized.

Milk Industry Act provides for:
(a) Licensing;
(b) Restricted entry; and
(c) Wide element of milk quality and safety.
