Egg Farming
The following is meant solely to help the reader understand the main features of primary regulations governing this activity, and not meant in any way to provide a legal interpretation.
BC Egg Marketing Board: BCEMB functions under the authority of the Natural Products Marketing (British Columbia) Act and the British Columbia Egg Marketing Scheme, 1967.
Licence Issuance - No person shall keep or maintain for the purposes of egg production or grow or produce for marketing, pack, store, transport or market the regulated product within British Columbia unless he is qualified for and applies to and does obtain from the Board annually, one or more appropriate licences of the types hereinafter described: 1. Registered Producer Licence. 2. Producer-Vendor Licence. 3. Producer-Grader Licence. 4. Commercial Hatching Egg Producer (Breeder) Licence. 5. Registered Grading Station Operator Licence. 6. Processed Egg Station (Breaker) Licence. 7. Chick Hatchery Operator Licence. 8. Marketing Licence. 9. Chick Sales Agent Licence. 10. Temporary Restricted Quota Licence.
New Entrant Draw - Due to small amount of quota available and the large number of persons interested in entering the egg business, the Board has opted for annual New Entrant Draws instead of setting up lengthy waiting lists. The draws will be conducted by a third party and staff are in the process of developing the policies and procedures that will govern the process.
British Columbia Provincial Egg Quota Exchange - All producers wishing to sell quota (Laying Hens) must do so through the Provincial Quota Exchange. Exemptions from this rule only include full farm transfers, direct family transfers (spouse, son, daughter, brother, sister), and business reorganization where percentage of ownership does not change. A Provincial Egg Quota Exchange is a program by which persons are able to buy and sell egg marketing quota (excluding farm lands and buildings).
