First Aid - Occupational

The following is meant solely to help the reader understand the main features of primary regulations governing this activity, and not meant in any way to provide a legal interpretation.

Workers' Compensation Act

Occupational First Aid standards are outlined under this Act.

One person must be certified at one of three levels of Occupational First Aid, depending on the number of people in the work group, hazard classification and the location of the work site (i.e. distance from nearest hospital).

Occupational First Aid:

Level 1 - To qualify for a Level 1 certificate a candidate must successfully complete a Level 1 training course or its equivalent (7 hours) as taught and evaluated by a person authorized by the board. To renew a Level 1 certification, a candidate must successfully retake the Level 1 course or its equivalent. Restricted Level 1 certificates are permitted in some circumstances for municipal fire departments.

Level 2 - To qualify for an initial Level 2 certificate, a candidate must successfully complete a Level 2 training course or its equivalent (35 hours), and achieve a grade of at least 70% on each of the written, oral and practical portions of the examination conducted by the board. This level of certification is mostly required in urban work sites. Restricted Level 2 certificates are permitted in some circumstances for health care facilities and municipal fire departments. For Level 2 recertification, a candidate may take the examination without retaking the course or a refresher course for up to 2 years after expiry of the certificate. A 24-hour renewal course is available to prepare the candidate for renewal examination.

Level 3 - To qualify for an initial Level 3 certificate, a candidate must successfully complete a Level 3 training course or its equivalent (70 hours), and achieve a grade of at least 70% on each of the written, oral and practical portions or the examination conducted by the board. This level of certification is mostly required in rural sites and some urban sites. For Level 3 recertification, a candidate may take the examination without retaking the course or a refresher course for up to 2 years after the expiry of the certificate. a 40-hour renewal course is available to prepare the candidate for a renewal examination.

Transportation Endorsement - To qualify for a certificate endorsement, the candidate must hold a valid Level 1 or Level 2 certificate and must successfully complete a board developed course or its equivalent. to renew a certificate endorsement, a candidate must successfully retake the board's training course or its equivalent.

Note: Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 certifications are valid for 2 years. A medical certificate of fitness must be received and approved by the board before a Level 2 or Level 3 certificate is issued.
