Health Professionals Act - Midwives Regulation:

The College of Midwives of British Columbia (CMBC) is the regulatory body for the profession of midwifery in the province of British Columbia (BC), Canada. It was established in March 1995 when the provincial legislature proclaimed the Midwives Regulation under the Health Professions Act 1 . The first midwives were registered to practice in BC on January 1, 1998.
The College's mandate is to serve and protect the public interest by regulating midwifery practice in accordance with the Act and the CMBC bylaws. The goal of the College is to register qualified, competent midwives to provide safe, high quality care to women and their families in the province of British Columbia.

The College has the following duties and objects 2 : to set the standards of education and qualifications for registration;
-to examine candidates for registration, assess competency and register qualified candidates;
-to set the standards of practice, and monitor and enforce them;
-to monitor the continuing competency of registrants;
-to establish a program to prevent professional misconduct of a sexual nature;
-to set standards of professional ethics, and monitor and enforce them.
