Health Protection Planning:

This Act is intended to maintain public health by preventing and removing a broad range of health hazards. There are powers to ensure that persons infected with a communicable disease are both treated and prevented from spreading the disease.

Under this Act, the Personal Service Establishment Regulation outlines the requirements for water supply and for the prevention of health hazards in 'personal service establishments' which include any establishments in which a person provides a service to, or on, the body of another person, namely, barbershops, beauty parlors, health spas, massage parlors, tattoo shops, saunas and steam baths.

Business Practices & Consumer Protection Act:

The Business Practices and Consumer Protection Agency is a not-for-profit organization which operates at an arm's length from Government. On July 4, 2004, the Authority assumed responsibility for the oversight of business practices and consumer protection in British Columbia, functions previously performed by the Consumer Services Division of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

The Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act consolidates six consumer
statutes. It provides clearer and consistent language and reduces overlap. For example,
the previous acts had six different definitions of deceptive business practices. The new
act has one definition. The act also better protects consumers by standardizing contract
terms, clarifying cancellation rights, and ensuring that penalties for infractions are applied
consistently across industries. The new areas of consumer law, like internet sales, have
also been addressed to harmonize with other Canadian jurisdictions.

Industry Training:

The Industry Training Authority (ITA) is the provincial government agency with responsibility for apprenticeships and industry training programs in BC. The ITA is working to support existing apprenticeship options, and to identify new training approaches. This will lead to a training system that provides expanded opportunities for British Columbians, and better meets industry and labour market needs
