Optician - Sale of Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses

The following is meant solely to help the reader understand the main features of primary regulations governing this activity, and not meant in any way to provide a legal interpretation.

Under British Columbia law, the fitting and dispensing of eyeglasses, contact lenses and subnormal vision devices to the public are regulated activities. Only registered members of these three regulatory bodies are authorized to practice the fitting and dispensing of corrective lenses:
- College of Opticians of British Columbia
- College of Optometrists of British Columbia
- College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia

The College of Opticians of BC regulates the practice of opticianry in accordance with the Health Professionals Act and the Regulations and Bylaws of the College.
They issues certificates of registration for the following registration classes:
- Registered Optician - Eyeglass Dispensing
- Registered Optician - Contact Lens and Eyeglasss Dispensing
- Registered Optician - Contact Lens Student
- Registered Optician - Non Practicing
All registrants of the College must meet basic educational requirements and pass the registration examinations related to the dispensing of eyeglasses, and to the fitting of contact lenses.
