The following is meant solely to help the reader understand the main features of primary regulations governing this activity, and not meant in any way to provide a legal interpretation.

Health Professions Act:

The Health Professions Act establishes three seperate authorities in the Nursing profession:
- The College of Registered Nurses of BC
- The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC
- The College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC

Anyone wishing to practice nursing in the province of BC must meet the requirements and be licensed by/registered with one of these organizations.

College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC):

The College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia is the regulatory body established to govern the practice of registered nursing in BC. Anyone wanting to practise nursing in British Columbia must have current practising registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia.In British Columbia, the Health Professions Act (HPA) permits only current CRNBC registrants to use the title "Registered Nurse," "RN," "Nurse Practitioner" or "NP."

College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC (CLPNBC):

The Health Professions Act (HPA) is the primary legislative authority under which the CLPNBC carries out its mandate to govern the LPN profession in the interest of protecting the public's safety.

In accordance with the HPA, the Board of Directors is authorized to oversee the business of the CLPNBC; to develop standards of education and practice, Code of Ethics; registration of candidates applying to become LPNs; renewal and reinstatement of registration; continuing competence programs, and other objectives. The Board is responsible for ensuring that the CLPNBC meets the objects specified in the Health Professions Act and the CLPNBC bylaws.

College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC (CRPNBC):

The Health Professions Act entrusts CRPNBC with the responsibility for establishing, monitoring and enforcing standards of education and qualifications for registration; developing and promoting high psychiatric nursing practice standards and the maintenance of nurses? competence; monitoring and enforcing professional ethics; and reducing incompetent, impaired or unethical nursing practice.
