Optometry/Optometrist

The following is meant solely to help the reader understand the main features of primary regulations governing this activity, and not meant in any way to provide a legal interpretation.

The Board of Examiners in Optometry in British Columbia is the regulatory body established to govern the practice of Optometry. The Board is established pursuant to the Optometrists Act.

The Board of Examiners in Optometry of British Columbia's functions include the following:
- Determine the academic qualifications required for an optometrist to obtain a license to practice in the province.
- Monitor and review the standards of practice for optometrists in British Columbia on an ongoing basis.
- Ensure optometrists meet and maintain the established competence standards, as assessed by the Quality Assurance program.
- Assist in the resolution of clinical issues which may arise between a patient and an optometrist.
- Discipline any optometrist who has been found to be in contravention of the Act, regulations and/or bylaws governing the profession.
- Liaise with government and other health care professions.
