Industry Bench Marking

Description:

Statistics Canada generates and publishes Financial Performance Indicators from business taxation statistics. This publication provides balance sheets, income statements and financial ratios for industries at the 4-digit SIC level. The information can be used to determine the strength of a particular industry and depending on the number of firms in a particular region, you can get down to the provincial level. This information can be used as a bench marking tool, allowing you to measure against your own performance or to compare your own breakdown of costs to the industry average.

NOTE: The Financial Performance Indicators database groups firms according to total annual revenues:

  • small businesses with less than $5 million in revenues;
  • medium sized businesses with revenues between $5 million and $25 million; and,
  • large businesses with revenues $25 million and over.

You will want to specify which size class you are interested in examining as well as the SIC code number for your industry.
