BUSINESS INCENTIVE PROGRAM FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Get reimbursed when you invest in energy-efficient technologies

In April 2004, Ontario announced a target to reduce electricity demand by 5% by 2007. This target is part of the Ontario Conserves initiative. The Business Incentive Program for Energy Efficiency supports this initiative by offering incentives to help businesses better manage their energy consumption.

The program provides a maximum of $50,000 in reimbursements for capital spending on energy-efficient technologies:

    • Some incentives are tied to specific equipment purchases
    • Applicants can also apply to be reimbursed for unique energy efficiency projects
    • Some utilities will share the costs of an initial energy audit

Eligibility and application

Institutional, industrial, and commercial customers are all eligible and can apply through their local utility. Agricultural and forestry customers are also eligible and apply through Hydro One. Most programs have a minimum peak demand requirement of 50 kW or a minimum peak demand reduction of 5 kW (Hydro One’s minimum reduction is 1kW). Eligibility guidelines vary - check the list of eligible utilities.

You can also apply for Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) funding. All sources of funding that you receive are considered in determining the amount of your incentive. NRCan also offers a program to share the costs of an initial assessment (ecoEnergy for Industry).

Eligible utilities

The utilities listed below cover about 70% of customers in Ontario. If yours is not listed, visit your local utility's website to see if they offer an alternative energy efficiency program. Even though some programs are closed, keep watching this page because new rounds of funding may be announced.
