The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) dairy inspection program's objective is to help ensure that dairy products leaving CFIA-inspected establishments, or being imported to Canada, are safe, meet standards and are appropriately labelled to avoid fraud under the Canada Agricultural Products Act. Most program activities are delivered at federally-registered establishments, with some laboratories being accredited to perform analyses of dairy products.

Eligibility Criteria

The CFIA's dairy inspection program applies to any establishment engaged in the interprovincial or international trade or movement of all dairy products.

Summary

The major activities undertaken by CFIA staff under this program include:

  • registration of manufacturing establishments;
  • inspection and certification of imports, exports and product destined for interprovincial trade;
  • residue testing;
  • retail inspection including enforcing regulations at retail;
  • policy and program development for food labelling and label verification; and
  • verifying that food advertising complies with requirements.

CFIA staff activities also include inspecting Canadian Dairy Commission warehouses for sanitation and health and safety conditions.
