CANMET's Explosive Regulatory Division (ERD) is responsible for administering Canada's Explosives Act and Regulations. ERD operates with two main goals in mind: first, to improve public safety; and second, to strengthen national security.

Summary

Under Canada's Explosives Act and Regulations, ERD:

  • maintains a system of authorization, licensing, certification and permits, supported by a compliance inspection program; and
  • takes steps to ensure that only responsible people have access to explosives.

ERD works to ensure compliance with the Explosives Act and Regulations in the manufacture, importation and distribution of many types of explosives, including:

  • Blasting explosives;
  • Pyrotechnics (special effects);
  • Fireworks;
  • Ammunition;
  • Propellant powders.

The Explosives Regulatory Division (ERD) provides a wide range of services. While the licensing and inspection of their Canadian clients is their top priority, the following describes the scope of services that ERD provides:

  • Explosive Licences, Certificates and Permits;
  • Importation;
  • Product Authorization and Classification;
  • Education - Fireworks and Pyrotechnics;
  • Consulting.
