Summary

The NRC Industrial Materials Institute (NRC-IMI) has an international reputation as a leader in the field of science and technology and as an active player in the system of innovation, helping firms to become more competitive and innovative.

The NRC-IMI seeks to promote innovation and economic growth by working with partners on research and development involving materials technologies. R&D activities focus on metals, polymers and ceramics, as well as composites and alloys. The NRC-IMI puts its expertise to work for industries where materials and manufacturing play a role, from instrument and equipment suppliers, to software engineering service providers and manufacturers of finished and semi-finished products.

The NRC-IMI's multidisciplinary expertise focuses on:

  • materials and process design that optimizes the formulation and behaviour of materials to enhance process-structure-performance relations;
  • smart technologies and technologies of virtual simulation and control involving modelling, visualization, high-performance computing and information processing;
  • advanced aluminium manufacturing technologies, such as hydroforming, electromagnetic forming, bonding, laser welding, vertical roll strip casting, as well as semi-solid forming die casting.

The NRC-IMI has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for developing new technologies. These facilities, some of which are unique in Canada, are also made available to industries for their own experimental development work.

R&D efforts are centred on three fields of activities:

  • Design of Materials Processing;
  • Virtual Technologies and Intelligent Control;
  • Aluminium Manufacturing Technology Centre.
