The census provides a statistical portrait of a country and its people. Most countries in the world carry out a census regularly. The census collects information on every man, woman and child living in Canada, to get a picture of the demographic, social and economic situation of the people living in various regions. The census is taken every five years, and the last census was held on May 16, 2006.
The first release of the 2006 Census will be in March 2007.
Census data are produced for many different geographic divisions of the country, both statistical and administrative. Many other products and services, including reference and geography products, are described in the 2001 Census Catalogue (catalogue No. 92-377-XIE).
