The Human Rights Commission forwards the principles of equality found in the New Brunswick Human Rights Act by promoting an understanding, acceptance and compliance with the Act.

The New Brunswick Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination (inequality) and harassment based on race, colour, national origin, place of origin, ancestry (includes mother-tongue), religion, sex (includes pregnancy), sexual orientation (includes heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality), age, marital status and physical or mental disability. The New Brunswick Human Rights Act applies to private and public sector employment, housing, public services, publicity and certain associations. However, it does not apply to activities that fall under federal jurisdiction.
The Commission's compliance staff receives, investigates and conciliates complaints of discrimination or harassment contrary to the New Brunswick Human Rights Act. It can only intervene in cases that involve a violation of the Act. Complaints must be filed within one year of the incident unless a time extension is granted by the Commission.
