To Whom Does This Apply?

Designers, manufacturers, distributers, installers and operators of electrical, nuclear and mechanical systems covered by legislation.

Summary

Technical Inspection Services is responsible for the provincial enforcement of legislation affecting electrical, plumbing, boiler and pressure vessel, propane, natural and medical gas installations, elevators and amusement rides. 

Regulatory activities include standard setting, design review, equipment registration, permits, inspection, qualifying and licensing manufacturers, installers and operators, compliance and accident investigation.

The branch also carries out plan approval and inspections relating to fire prevention and safety.

Electrical
Regulations generally apply to all electrical systems and equipment with the notable exceptions of electrical and communication utility systems, equipment and wiring on aircraft, ships, trains and automotive equipment, motor rewinding and repairing of radios and other electronic equipment.

Boiler and Pressure Vessels
Regulations apply to boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, air receivers, liquid receivers, oil refineries, refrigeration plants, steam processors, power plants, heating plants, propane, natural and medical gas installations. Regulations do not apply to equipment installed in residential buildings of four (4) units or less.

Elevators
Regulations generally apply to all elevating systems and amusement rides, including passenger elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, manlifts, freight platform lifts, chair or gondola lifts, T-Bar lifts, rope tows, construction hoists and lifts for persons with physical disabilities. Regulations do not apply to elevators and lifts in private residences or lubrication hoists.

Plumbing
Regulations generally apply to all drainage, venting, water systems and equipment.
