As part of its International Cultural Relations Program, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) provides grants to Canadian groups and individuals for the promotion of Canadian performing arts abroad.

Summary

International touring projects

The objective of the programme is the promotion of Canadian interests abroad through travel grants for international tours by Canadian companies, groups and artists in the fields of music, theatre, dance or multi-disciplinary creation and performance. Within the context of the general eligibility guidelines, priority will be given to projects meeting basic criteria including and not limited to a minimum of 10 performances in three different cities and countries where a fee is being paid to the company by the local presenter.

Special projects

This program is intended to provide funding possibilities for projects that might not meet all the International Touring Projects requirements as defined above. Priority consideration will be give to projects that are taking place in at least one DFAIT priority country. Young and upcoming artists launching international careers in new markets or countries within the above-mentioned context may apply.  However, this category does not fund showcase opportunities at conferences or international gatherings nor does it fund travel to performances at Canadian Embassies, Consulates or High Commissions.

Support for Canadian festivals and conferences

The objective of this program is the promotion of Canadian interests abroad through the forging of relationships between international presenters and Canadian festivals, conferences and the Canadian artists present at these events.

Priority will be given to projects with a focus on one or more DFAIT priority country and with a range of Canadian companies from across the country.  Preference will be given to foreign presenters who represent major festivals, theatres or concert halls abroad, which by their reputation and prestige can help launch the international careers of artists and develop international markets for Canadians.

Amount of grant

Grants will generally cover the cost of international transportation, or a part thereof, up to an amount equivalent to 30% of the total project budget. The maximum grant allowable through this programme is $250 000.

Conformity with the guidelines and the basic criteria does not guarantee funding. Grants will be awarded subject to the availability of funds. Decisions will generally be communicated two to four months after receipt of the application.

Application procedure and deadlines

All applications are done online through the PCR interactive Internet application program Promart2000, at the Arts Promotion page of the DFAIT's Web site. It is the applicant's responsibility to fill in all sections of the application form and submit it within the posted deadlines. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The application deadlines for each fiscal year, which runs from April 1 to March 31, are:

  • December 1 - for projects beginning no earlier than April 1 of the following year;
  • March 1 - for projects beginning no earlier than June 1 of the same year;
